Notes:

The Mehter military band music, also known as Janissary music, is perhaps the most well-known musical tradition of the Ottomon Empire. In fact, the tradition is so influential, it has even appeared in great Western classical composers works, such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K 331, Mvt. 3, Alla Turca: Allegretto in A minor) and Ludwig van Beethoven (Op. 113, The Ruins of Athens, Marcia alla turca).

The most famous song of the tradition is Ceddin Deden, from which these pieces find their inspiration. The militaristic marching style is quite evident in both the war and the peace. Listen for hints of Mozart and Beethoven in the war piece.

Lyrics to the original song are:

Ceddin, deden, neslin, baban;
Ceddin, deden, neslin, baban;
Hep kahraman Türk milleti.
Orduların, pek çok zaman, vermiştiler dünyaya şan.
Orduların, pek çok zaman, vermiştiler dünyaya şan.
Türk milleti!, Türk milleti!;
Türk milleti!, Türk milleti!;
Aşk ile sev milliyeti,
Kahret vatan düşmanını, çeksin o mel'un zilleti.
Kahret vatan düşmanını, çeksin o mel'un zilleti.

English Translation:

(Seek) Your ancestors, your grandfathers, your generation, your father
(Seek) Your ancestors, your grandfathers, your generation, your father
The Turkish nation has always been valiant.
Your armies, many times, have been renowned throughout the world.
Your armies, many times, have been renowned throughout the world.
Turkish nation!, (O) Turkish nation!
Turkish nation!, (O) Turkish nation!
love (your) freedom passionately,
Overwhelm the enemies of your motherland, and thus shall those cursed ones suffer abjection.
Overwhelm the enemies of your motherland, and thus shall those cursed ones suffer abjection.
